Nonproliferation, arms control, disarmament

Prohibiting the transfer or proliferation by States, companies or individuals of materials, technology and expertise of weapons of mass destruction is vital to safeguard the world, particularly from nuclear terrorism.

The Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty (NPT) aims to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and weapons technology and further the goal of disarmament. The Treaty establishes a safeguards system under the responsibility of the International Atomic Energy Agency, which also plays a central role under the Treaty in areas of technology transfer for peaceful purposes.

Fissile materials, namely plutonium and uranium, are used in nuclear energy and weapons production processes. Green Cross is a member of the US-Based Fissile Materials Working Group, which advocates for action to stop such materials falling into the hands of potential makers of “dirty bombs.”
