The Earth Charter

In 1994, Maurice Strong and Mikhail Gorbachev launched the Earth Charter initiative with support from the Dutch government. The Charter is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just society with special emphasis on the world’s environmental challenges. The Charter seeks to inspire a new sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility.

  • The Earth Charter is endorsed has been around 6,000 organizations and almost 20,000 individuals.
  • The annual Earth Charter Youth Contest in Italy contributes to the environmental education of school children. It features an award ceremony with the President of the Italian Republic

What we do

The Earth Charter Youth Contest is now in its 21st year and is held in several countries including Italy, the Czech Republic and Sri Lanka. The Green Cross global network has reached close to 1 million children in recent years through arts contests, school materials, hands-on projects and the innovative Green Cross Environmental Diary initiative, which are all helping prepare today’s youth for their roles as custodians of the planet.
