Water for Peace

Water is scarce, precious and under pressure. It crosses borders and raises tensions among countries and people relying on it for life.

Green Cross promotes cooperation over shared water resources, like rivers, and advocates for the ratification and entry into force of the UN Watercourses Convention to ensure global watercourses are fairly managed and shared.

We are leading international efforts with partners such as the World Wildlife Fund and the Global Water Partnership to help the UN Watercourses Convention enter into force.

We are committed to promoting good governance and cooperation over freshwater resources and believe cooperation and integrated approaches can ensure access to water for all people and protecting our aquatic ecosystems.

What we do

The UN Watercourses Convention, adopted in 1997, is the only global Convention that governs the use, management and protection of international watercourses. Thirty-five countries must ratify it for it to enter into force, and as of 2012 there are a handful of signatures still needed.
