One of the more important and dangerous challenges, both throughout and since the end of the Cold War, has been winding down the enormous and costly stockpiles of nuclear weapons and strategic delivery systems, especially in the United States and former Soviet Union. Green Cross has been active since the mid-1990s in facilitating the safe transport, storage, and dismantlement of nuclear warheads and launch systems.
Weapons demilitarization
Green Cross works to ensure the safe and timely elimination of weapons stockpiles - nuclear, chemical, biological, and conventional weapons and related launch systems - to enhance security, counter theft and diversion, and prevent harmful public health and environmental impacts.
Years after the end of the Cold War, Green Cross is still active in the former Soviet Union, as well as in the United States and elsewhere.
We advocate for the safe demilitarization of arms stockpiles, as well as promoting new, safer technologies and processes, including "closed destruction systems," to ensure that the weapons disposal does not leave dangerous health and environmental scars.
Green Cross promotes transparency, accountability, and collaboration on demilitarization and nonproliferation through international meetings, exchanges, dialogues, and media outreach.
What we do
An important challenge to global security and sustainability in the post-Cold War period relates to the large stockpiles of deadly chemical weapons which remained. The United States and Soviet Union bilaterally agreed in the late 1980s to eliminate their chemical weapons stockpiles of 28,600 and 40,000 metric tons, respectively.
