At the 2008 Global Forum for Sport and Environment (G-ForSE), Mr. Alberto Fraguas, the Executive Director of Green Cross Spain, took the opportunity to highlight Spain's strategy as the first country to link Sport and Sustainable Development.

In his speech, Mr. Fraguas illustrated Spain's National Strategy, which is a collaborative effort by the Ministry of Education, Social Policy and Sport, the Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs, the Spanish Olympic Committee and Green Cross Spain. The strategy aims to provide the basis for a global policy for sustainable development that makes Spain more competitive in the organization of large international sporting events as well the basis for an environmental policy for sport.
The Forum, organised by the United Nations Environment Programme in collaboration with the Global Sports Alliance of Japan and Volvo, took place in Alicante, Spain from 4 to 6 October with the theme "Climate Change: Changing our Carbon Footprint." The 200 participants included representatives of sports organisations and federations, the International Olympic Committee, sporting goods manufacturers, United Nations agencies, NGOs and government as well as sports personalities.
