Earth Charter Youth Contest in Czech Republic

The eleventh Earth Charter Youth Contest was held in the Czech Republic throughout June 2008. This year, the contest was co-organized between Green Cross and the Club of Ecological Education under the supervision of Mrs. Dana Kvasnickova.

The annual art and literature contest stimulates young minds to be more in tune with our changing environment, promoting wider public awareness about environmental issues. The creativity of young students throughout Czech Republic and the region as displayed though painting and essays is an indication that today’s youth is concerned and pro-active about protecting the environment. The painting and essay-writing components of the contest amounted to 188 children paintings from 54 schools and 102 essays and creative writing submissions were received for the literary component, all inspired from the central theme of the contest: “The face of the Earth is constantly changing”.

After careful review and jury selection of all the paintings and essays describing our constantly changing environment, a final ceremony was held at the Czernin Palace, current residence of the Minister of Interior, to showcase the most creative works. Besides guests from universities, recent President of the Academy of Science Mrs. Helena Illnerova as well as the Chairman of UNESCO Czech Republic also participated in the final ceremony. The now rich repertoire of art in Czech Republic collected over the eleven youth contests promises more successful contests in the future.
