Launch of the Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace

Water Programme Director Marie-Laure Vercambre will lead Green Cross’ presence at the launch of the Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace.

16 November 2015
WIPO Main Conference Hall
Place des Nations, Geneva

This event is being held as part of Geneva Peace Week, which runs from 16 to 20 November. Sustainable water resource management is one of the global challenges of the 21st century – a growing source of social economic and political instability, and a significant factor in peace and security. Green Cross has been addressing this very issue from a civil society perspective for two decades.

Despite the complexity of the challenges, water can be transformed from a source of crisis into an instrument of peace. Broad consultations with political leaders, diplomats and water experts have shown the need for a high-level political debate on how to prevent water conflicts. The Global High-Level Panel on Water and Peace will include eminent persons from national governments, civil society, academia, international organizations and the private sector, with the Geneva Water Hub serving as its Secretariat.

The event will open with remarks from Swiss Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, UNOG Director-General Michael Moller, and WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud. It will also feature a composition by musician Mich Gerber.
