It is with great sadness that Green Cross learnt of the loss of Maurice Strong over the weekend. We have not just lost a colleague in our joint work on the Earth Charter and Earth Dialogues, we have lost an invaluable friend and a visionary. He was the driving force who brought together the Rio Earth Summit delegation that conceived the idea of “Green Cross” – this organization exists because of his efforts.
Being in his own words “a socialist in ideology, a capitalist in methodology”, Maurice Strong was quick to realise the threats to humanity posed by our civilization’s reckless disregard for the environment. Since that time he has been a tireless warrior for sustainable development, playing a unique and critical role is globalizing the environmental movement.
Strong was the driving force of both the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, which launched the world environment movement, and the 1992 Rio Environmental Summit, becoming the first Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Above all, he will be remembered for his great vision, the wealth of experience and the positive approach he brought to challenges that confront us.
We express our deep sympathy to the members of his family.
