Caux Dialogue on Land and Security, 29 June to 3 July

Green Cross’ Adam Koniuszewski will intervene at the opening session of the four-day (from 29 June to 3 July) Caux Land and Security Dialogue on the potential for land restoration to mitigate migration.

Koniuszewski will be one of the experts contributing to the 30 June session on land degradation, migration pressure and conflict, and will lead a workshop on the role of interfaith initiatives in environmental restoration and trust-building on 2 July.

In 2015, migration flow reached its highest level since World War II. More than one million irregular migrants and refugees arrived on Europe’s shores alone, according to the International Organisation for Migration, in addition to the millions displaced within their nations. At the same time, nearly 25 per cent of the world’s productive lands and 10 to 20 per cent of dry lands are degraded. Farmers are being forced to migrate in search of fertile land and pastoralists must venture further to seek pastures. Tensions over land reduce the ability to manage resources, worsening the degradation, and resulting in conflict.

Finding and sharing effective, creative and inspiring solutions to complex problems is what the Caux Dialogue on Land and Security (CDLS) is all about. Through a host of engaging panels and interactive workshops, policymakers, activists, scientists and farmers will chart ways to unpack the complexity inherent in land degradation, migration and conflict. CDLS 2016 will gather pioneers from around the world who are developing solutions based on trust-building and agro-ecological insights to boost land restoration.
