For the fifth consecutive year, The Green Drop Award is returning to the Venice International Film Festival. The prize is awarded by Green Cross Italy to films that bring attention to the values of ecology and sustainable development.
The 2016 Jury selecting the winning film includes award-winning director Ricky Tognazzi and actor/writer/director Simona Izzo, with Italian actress Francesca Cavallin serving as Master of Ceremonies for the events.
The winner is awarded the Green Drop Trophy, a blown-glass water-drop created by Murano glassmaker Simone Cenedese. The Drop contains soil, which is collected from a different region every year. This year’s trophy is filled with soil from Assisi, the land of Saint Francis, one of nature’s earliest defenders.
“Assisi’s vocation revolved around the reconstruction, reunification and restoration of the fracture between humans and nature,” said Elio Pacilio, President of Green Cross Italy. “For this reason, five years after the creation of the Green Drop Award we wanted to turn back to this land and spread our message of sustainability, peace between people and dialogue.”
The soil of Assisi was given to Elio Pacilio and Marco Gisotti, Director of the Green Drop Award, by Padre Enzo Fortunato, Director of the Sacro Convento di Assisi’s press room.
“The person who wins this award will not only win a prize,” declared Padre Fortunato, “but also a big responsibility – To continue increasing awareness and testifying in the defence of the environment.”
Previous editions and juries
The Green Drop Award was established by Green Cross Italy, the Italian branch of the International NGO founded by Mikhail Gorbachev. The prize is awarded during the Venice International Film Festival to the movie deemed to show the best interpretation of ecological and sustainable development values.
This is the award’s fifth edition. In 2012, it was won by “The Fifth Season” by Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth. In 2013, by Amos Gitai’s “Ana Arabia”. In 2014, Andrei Konchalovsky won for “The Postman’s White Nights”, and in 2015 the prize went to “Behemoth” by Zhao Liang.
