Green Cross mourns the passing of Shimon Peres

Shimon Peres, former President and Prime Minister of Israel, and a Nobel peace prize laureate, has died on 28 September at the age of 93. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Israeli people, the world community, and the Peres family in particular.

Mr. Peres received the Nobel peace prize together with his partners in crafting the Oslo Peace Accords, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation Yasser Arafat. He was also one of the great intellectuals of world politics, always reaching to broaden horizons and expand perspectives.

We celebrate the strong friendship Mr. Peres formed with Green Cross founder and fellow Nobel laureate Mikhail Gorbachev, and thank Mr. Peres for the many valuable contributions he made to Green Cross.

“It is with deep sorrow that I learned of the death of my friend Shimon Peres,” said Mr. Gorbachev. “His boundless energy, ideas, and innovative approaches to solve complex international problems could challenge much younger politicians. He tried to use his experience and political wisdom in the search for ways out of the impasse into which world politics have sometimes wandered.”

Mr. Peres suffered a stroke on 13 September and had been in hospital near Tel Aviv when he died.

His memory will be cherished by the Green Cross family, and our sincerest condolences go to his children Tsvia, Yonathan and Nehemia.
