Global Green USA and more than 350 guests celebrated the 2009 Millennium Awards ceremony on 30 May at a star-studded fundraising gala in Santa Monica, California. The event raised over $500,000 to support Global Green USA and recognized honorees Wallis Annenberg, Jeff Skoll, Marc Nathanson and Zem Joaquin.
“All Americans can do something about climate change, and protect our most precious natural resource our children by responding to the call to create green schools and healthy classrooms,” said Global Green President Matt Petersen. “Incredibly, today we spend more on energy bills in schools than on textbooks and computers combined.”
Celebrity supporters and presenters in attendance included: Rosario Dawson, Adrian Grenier, Arianna Huffington, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Amy Smart, Radha Mitchell, Sharon Lawrence, David Duchovny, Billy Zane, Davis Guggenheim, Mia Maestro, Luke Perry, Maggie Grace and Blake Mycoskie, Austin Nichols, Eve Ensler and Domenico Vacca, as well as award-winning hip-hop poets Steve Connell and Sekou ‘Tha Misfit’ Andrews, who performed at the event.
Global Green’s Millennium Awards were established to recognize and herald those whose lives and livelihood embody our mission of “fostering a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure world.” The Awards, presented annually in Los Angeles, were designed to honor individuals and organizations who recognize the important connection between humans and nature, to celebrate their success and inspire others to make such exceptional behavior the norm.
