At the 11th Environmental Diary Contest award ceremony on 12 December 2009 in Tokyo, Japanese students were pleasantly surprised to see the GCI Founding President Mikhail Gorbachev. In his address, Mr. Gorbachev praised the state of cleanliness in Japan, its beauty and the Japanese peoples’ love of nature. He personally handed out the Mikhail Gorbachev Award on the occasion. The last time Mr. Gorbachev attended the award ceremony was in 2000.
About 200 elementary school students, ranging in age from 6 to 12, gathered from all over Japan to receive awards for their 12-week diary submissions. In addition, teachers and parents were also on hand to support the students, bringing the total number of participants in the awards ceremony to more than 600. Three diary contest winners from Sri Lanka also participated in the ceremony with their attendance serving as part of their prize.
Eco Kids Summit and award ceremony was as part of the Eco Products 2009 business show that featured companies exhibiting their environmental products and activities. During the fair, Green Cross Japan organized an Eco-Tour for the kids to the company booths in order to learn about the company’s environmental activities.
