We are playing a dangerous game with our future

We have a choice. If we do not eliminate sources of global environmental threats today, they will eliminate us tomorrow. Despite scientific evidence and growing public consciousness, it is becoming a too real scenario because the leaders and governments have still not been able to work out a sustainable development strategy for humanity: a global strategy and, what is more important, a reliable one.

By 2050, over 9 billion people will make use of the Earth’s benefits. The need for drinking water, clean air, unpolluted soil and healthy forests has been growing rapidly. The explosion of growth generates unprecedented amounts of waste and toxic pollutants. We are breaching the Earth’s efficiency limits. Unlimited growth is not possible on a planet with limited resources.

Leaders, politicians and entrepreneurs must abandon naïve thinking that polluted wind and water will stop at the borders of States or continents. Without innovative and sustainable models for energy, heavy industry or agriculture, the world economy will be susceptible to even fiercer crises and tensions. They must realize that in the game, where a friendly and modern world for our children and grandchildren is at stake, all of us may be the losers: with no extra-time.
