Green Cross Australia’s Witness King Tides Project

The King Tides Project put in place by Green Cross Australia is aimed at raising awareness about the threat of sea level rise on Australian coastal communities. The point is for participants to take a few photos of the king tide to help track the future impact of climate change.

But what exactly are king tides? It is not a scientific term, but it is used to describe an exceptionally high tide, occurring twice a year. This high tide is due to the alignment of the gravitational pull between sun and moon.

These tides are not an effect of climate change; they are a natural part of tide cycles. However, according to the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization), Australia’s national science agency, by 2060 to 2070, the country could experience king tides every month because of the sea level rise.

That’s why it’s important for Australians to be informed and engaged on this issue. Being able to get a sense of future change could allow the coastal communities to plan and prepare for it.
