Matsahide Matsumoto, Mayor of Japan’s Katsurao village, was recognized with a 2013 Green Star Award in the Response catergory for his leadership and planning in the evacuation of his village’s inhbitants in the wahe of the March 2011 Japanese earthquake, tsunami and Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown.The biennial Green Star Awards, in its third edition in 2013, are a joint initiative beween the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Green Cross International, and the United Nations Environment Programme. The awards recognize individuals, organizations, governments and companies who have demonstrated achievements in prevention, preparedness and response to environmental emergencies. Related content:
