On 2 September, 2013, the Kenya Red Cross Society was presented with a Green Star Award in the Preparedness catergoy recognition of its efforts in disaster risk reduction, and in particular for its work during the Mukuru-Sinai slum (Nairobi) industrial accident in September 2011. To prevent a similar crisis from occurring in the future, the Kenya Red Cross Society implemented an Urban Disaster Risk Reduction Programme in seven informal settlements in Nairobi.The biennial Green Star Awards, in its third edition in 2013, are a joint initiative beween the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, Green Cross International, and the United Nations Environment Programme. The awards recognize individuals, organizations, governments and companies who have demonstrated achievements in prevention, preparedness and response to environmental emergencies. Related content:
