On behalf of the whole Green Cross International (GCI) family, we wish you, our Founding President Mikhail Gorbachev, a happy 80th Birthday.
As our founder and guiding figure, GCI arguably would not be what it is today, a network of over 30 national offices around the world working to address the inter-connected challenges of security, poverty and the environment, if it weren’t for the vision of President Gorbachev.
Founded in 1993, Gorbachev first described the idea of creating a “red cross for the environment” at the Global Forum on Environment and Development for Survival in Moscow in January 1990. Developing this idea, delegates at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 gave Gorbachev the mandate to create Green Cross International, which he did on 18 April 1993 in Kyoto, Japan.
Gorbachev has been concerned with the state of the environment well before the creation of Green Cross. To celebrate Gorbachev’s 80th birthday and honor his lifelong commitment to sustainability, GCI will publish “Mikhail Gorbachev: Prophet of Change”, which traces the evolution of his environmental vision. Due to be published by Clairview Books on 26 April, this special publication will include tributes from political contemporaries and partners in the environmental and peace movements, such as George H. W. Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Maurice Strong, Achim Steiner, Sir David King and Georgio Armani.
Happy Birthday President Gorbachev, thank you for your dedication to the environment, we wish you all the best!
