A new initiative to help cities and local authorities respond to the challenges of climate change has been launched by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability. The GreenClimateCities initiative was announced on 18 June 2012 and comes in response to the Statement on Action to Face the Urgent Realities of Climate Change, which was launched the same day by the Climate Change Task Force in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on the sidelines of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). The initiative was announced by ICLEI Secretary-General Konrad Otto-Zimmermann. “The GreenClimateCities initiative invites cities worldwide to join efforts by local governments from all parts of the world to take voluntary climate action now and not wait for national governments to eventually come to a global climate agreement,” ICLEI said in a statement.
