People’s livelihoods also fall victim to environmental disasters. To help alleviate poverty and unemployment, Green Cross provides vital economic support at grassroots level so families can earn incomes and be self sufficient.The financial crisis, bankruptcy of rural farming communities, liquidation of manufacturing establishments, lack of investments in alternative economic activities and consequent growing rate of unemployment has increased the number of dysfunctional, broken and poor families in communities where Green Cross works in South-East Asia, northern Iraq and the Chernobyl region.  Microcredit loans help families buy livestock and tend their fields, providing food for their own tables and products that can be sold at markets. Scores of families receive micro-credit loans to improve their social and economic conditions. Green Cross provides micro-credit loans and small business training support to families living in contaminated areas as part of a strategy to support local sustainable economic development.
