Sri Lanka Environmental Diaries continues to grow

Now its fourth year of producing the Green Lane Environmental Diaries, Green Cross Sri Lanka saw the participation in the programme rise this year to 5,150 students from 46 schools in Sri Lanka. The programme includes a speech and essay writing contest, for which three winners will be selected and travel to the Children’s Symposium in Tokyo Japan with their teacher to receive the award. A seminar was also organised for teachers on the environment with lectures by environmentalists.

Mr. Jagath Seneviratne, President of GC Sri Lanka advising students on how to write an Environmental Diary.

The programme is based on the Green Cross Japan programme with the Environmental Guidebook being translated from Japanese to Sinhalese for distribution to 5,000 students. While the Japanese programme was been going strong for nine years, the programme made its way to Sri Lanka in 2005, starting with one school and 80 students and has grown each year since then.

The expansion of the programme into Sri Lanka was funded by the Mitsui & Co. Ltd. Environment Fund with Sony Music Communications Inc of Japan also donating Eco Bags, notebooks, pens and T-shirts to help shape the future environmentalists of Sri Lanka.
