Green Cross International and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have renewed their official relationship thereby continuing the cooperation between the two organizations for another 6 years.
GCI looks forward to continuing cooperation with UNESCO on a variety of activities. Some examples of past cooperation include :
- The signing of a global agreement by Green Cross Brazil and UNESCO in November 2009 on water training
- Partnered for the movie “Here to Stay” (“Nous Resterons Sur Terre”), which included GCI Founding President Mikhail Gorbachev and served as the basis for the global UNESCO environmental education initiative
- GCI and UNESCO-IHE worked together for the “Fifth World Water Forum on urban water management” in March 2009
- GCI and the UNESCO Centre for Water Law, Policy and Science cooperated to generate for the ratification and adoption of the United Nations World Watercourses Convention
- GCI, UNESCO and the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Forum produced a statement in support of ambitious climate action ahead of the Climate Change Conference in 2008 and 2009
- GCI organized a panel discussion on “Water as a Human Right” at the 2008 Nobel Peace Laureates summit
- GC Brazil and the State of Minas Gerais created in May 2007 a category 2 UNESCO centre, the HydroEx UNESCO Institute to focus on environmental education and capacity-building in the field of water management
