June 5th will mark this year’s World Environment Day (WED), an annual event to raise awareness for global action on environmental issues.
The 2014 theme is entitled “Think, Eat, Save”, and will stress the importance of reducing your food footprint and decreasing food waste.
“According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.”
WED, created by the United Nations General Assembly and overseen by the United Nations Environmental Program, has set up a website full of ideas on how you and your community can participate in positive environmental change. There is also an active social media platform where you can submit photos, videos and stories of how you contributed to WED this year.
